For beginners, we would certainly recommend more docile creatures, like Leopard Geckos, or a Corn Snake. Corn Snakes are docile, and are very easy to handle, and Leopard Geckos are nimble, friendly, and generally have a playful demeanour.
This largely depends on the reptile itself, as most of them will have their own preferred diets. Geckos should only eat insects like crickets and roaches, bearded dragons will be happy with a mix of berries, greens, and live insects, whereas snakes enjoy eating frozen mice that have been thawed. Before buying your pet, it’s worth taking a while to research their exact dietary requirements, or if you are unsure, ask us, and we’ll be happy to help you.
Yes, and no. Initially, they will be very defensive, and won’t enjoy being handled, but you can train them into the habit from a young age, and they can enjoy it. From their youth, we recommend spending some time every day placing your hand palm up on their enclosure, to give them the time to get used to you and your scent, and to show them that you are not a threat. Eventually, they should be comfortable enough to climb onto your hand by themselves. When picking up lizards, you should never approach them from behind, and lift them in a way that their legs are supported, as they may panic and try to struggle, and injure themselves or worse if they fall.
A lot of vets in Ireland aren’t equipped to handle and provide care for exotic pets. Your best bet is to contact your local veterinary clinic before you get your reptile, and ensure they will be able to take care of them, should they need treatment. If they cannot help you, they should be able to refer you to an exotic pet specialist, who can help you should any issues arise.
